FAIRY RING

FAIRY RING

Pathogen: Several species of mushroom producing fungi

Fairy Rings as the name implies are circular in shape ranging in size from a few inches to 10 feet or more. Symptoms can vary (depending on the species of the fungi) and can be difficult to diagnose in a non-laboratory setting.

There are two types of fairy rings:

Edaphic rings create a hydrophobic layer in the soil beneath turfgrass, preventing water penetration eventually killing the roots causing a dead ring pattern in the turf.

Lectophilic rings are created when certain fungi inhabit the thatch layer and decompose plant debris. These rings cause depressions in impacted areas, dark green rings are associated with this ring caused by the high nitrogen content in the perimeter of the impacted areas.
